Webster-Shamu

Former cabinet minister Webster Shamu said he did not own any night club or pub after Kuwadzana East legislator Nelson Chamisa interrupted his contribution on human trafficking to clarify whether he owned the strip club known as “The Private Lounge”.

Several legislators had slammed the strip club and called for its closure claiming that it was being used to recruit women to Kuwait where they were used as cheap labour and exploited.

Some 150 women are said to have been trafficked to Kuwait under the guise that they would be offered lucrative jobs only to end up being abused with some being to have sex with as many as 10 men a day.

Home Affairs Minister Ignatius Chombo said 32 people including 20 Zimbabweans were involved in the scam. Seven of these were on the run.

Mabvuku-Tafara Member of Parliament, James Maridadi was the first to mention that some legislators were involved in the trafficking and promised to name them.

When asked to explain if he was involved, Shamu said: “If I may, through you Mr. Speaker, inform the House that I do not own any kind of night club or pub in my business activities.  In fact Mr. Speaker, it has (been) a common feature in this House, of people casting aspersions on Hon. Members of Parliament. I remember I was even, by the same Hon. Members on my right, accused of having been bought a vehicle by ZBC and yet that vehicle was one of the many vehicles that were given to Ministers through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.  The track record is there on paper.”
