Zimbabwe to announce decision on lockdown tomorrow

Zimbabwe will announce its decision on whether to extend the national lockdown or not tomorrow, government spokesman Nick Mangwana said on his twitter handle today.

The 21-day lockdown came into effect on 30 March and ends at midnight tomorrow.

“Regarding the question of whether the #LockDownZim will be extended or not, and if extended, what shape that will take, we would like to advise that an announcement will be made tomorrow,” Mangwana tweeted.

Zimbabwe has so far tested 2 493 people for the coronavirus and 24 are positive. Three of those positive have since died and two have recovered.

Those seeking extension of the lockdown  say Zimbabwe has tested too few people and testing only picked up two days ago when it tested 583 people on 16 April and 1 194 yesterday.

Today’s test figures are not yet out.

Business, however, says the country cannot afford an extension of the lockdown as most employers will not be able to pay their workers.

More than 7 000 have been arrested for violating the lockdown.

The Ministry of Health has set a target of testing about 30 000 people by the end of this month.
