Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai leader Thokozani Khupe has called on Zimbabweans to resolve that this will be the last Christmas they will spend in such deplorable conditions.
In her Christmas message the MDC-T leader said that there had been a lot of hope that 2018 would be a different year after political leaders promised a country “flowing with milk and honey” in exchange for the people’s vote but nothing of the sort had happened.
Zimbabwe held its harmonised elections on 30 July but it was rocked by violence two days later which led to the death of six people.
The main opposition Movement for Democratic Change challenged the presidential election result, lost the case in the country’s highest court but insists it does not recognise the winner Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The country plunged into a crisis with prices rocketing at the beginning of October when the new government introduced new monetary and fiscal policies.
“This Christmas should have been a time of joy and families coming together to celebrate the festive season. Sadly this year is no exception too, many lost their loved ones through the carnage on our poor road network. Many more lost their loved ones through preventable diseases and the infernos that visited us throughout the country,” Khupe said.
“Millions continue to live in abject poverty as a result of the poor policies and decisions of the ruling elite. The fuel queues continue unabated leaving many stranded and away from family and loved ones while the black market has stocks of unlimited supply at obscene prices.
“This is an indictment on the political leadership of our nation which a few months ago promised us a country ‘flowing with milk and honey’ in exchange for our vote.”
Khupe called on Zimbabweans to each be a Messiah who will rescue the country and the next person.
“Let us resolve on this Christmas day, that as a Nation, Zimbabwe, that we need the birth of a messiah and that Messiah is each and everyone one of us,” she said.
“Our resolve means that this is the last Christmas we’ll spend in such deplorable conditions. Each messiah amongst us has a singular task to create opportunities for the next person.”
