The government yesterday assured civil servants that they would be paid their bonuses and will continue to get their salaries every month quashing rumours that were circulating on the social media. “The Civil Service Commission, as the government employer, hereby acknowledges the payment of bonuses made to date and the commitment of the Ministry of Finance in its press statement of the 8th of January 2015 on the same. It further wishes to assure all government employees that government remains committed to pay salaries monthly. It therefore wishes to dissociate itself from statements that are being peddled in the social media to the contrary. Such pronouncements are both malicious and unwarranted,” acting secretary of the Civil Service Commission Clifford Matorera said. Teachers have already been paid their bonuses. Next week, the government is paying workers in the health sector, after that the rest of the civil service, and finally those from grant-aided institutions will be paid on 6 February. Salaries of civil servants are gobbling up more than 80 percent of the government budget, leaving very little for development.
