Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa got his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in the resort town of Victoria Falls today together with 5 268 others raising the number of people that have been vaccinated so far to 49 404.
Although the vaccination of the President marked the beginning of phase two of the programme, the number of people vaccinated so far is still below the target for the first phase which was put at 60 000.
A total of 1 427, including Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai leader Douglas Mwonzora, got the second dose raising the total to 2 489.
There were 32 new coronavirus cases today but no deaths. Cases now stand at 36 749.
Twenty-nine people recovered raising the figure to 34 476.
The number of active cases rose slightly to 757 with Harare having 444, Bulawayo 109, Matebeleland North 106 and Manicaland 34.
Masvingo is now down to four cases.
Both Zimbabwe and South Africa have warned that they would be tightening travel restrictions at Easter to prevent a surge in the number of coronavirus cases.
Zimbabwe had its biggest number of cases following the Christmas Holiday and saw the number of cases and deaths in January alone surpassing those for the nine months to December.
