Zambians are the happiest people in Southern Africa but if member countries of the Southern African Development Community are taken as a group, they are second after Mauritius.

According to the World Happiness Index for 2015 Mauritius ranked at 71 in the world with the happiest African country, ironically, being Libya which stands at 63.

Mozambique is placed at number 94 coming after Zambia in Southern Africa, followed by Lesotho at number 97, Swaziland at 101 and South Africa at 113.

Zimbabwe is placed at 115 beating Botswana at 128, Malawi at 131, Angola at 137, Tanzania at 146 and finally Madagascar at 147.

Namibia is not included in the rankings.

Eight predictors are used to determine the index. These are per capita gross domestic product, social support, generosity, freedom to make life choices, life expectancy, perceptions of corruption, positive affect and negative affect.

According to the report, the happiest people in the world are in Switzerland.
