War veterans loyal to the G40 faction failed to bulldoze their way at the just ended annual conference when they tried to bar those loyal to Mutsvangwa and Mnangagwa.
Mugabe was forced to bring them in when he was advised that the conference might be derailed if he excluded them.
G40 is said to be loyal to First Lady Grace Mugabe, who recently sparked debate about her expensive habits, but Mugabe’s former deputy, Joice Mujuru, said Mugabe was the leader of G40 and not Grace or Kasukuwere or Jonathan Moyo.
Mutsvangwa also implied this when he said: “They seem to know what is happening at State House that all other citizens do not know. They seem to have the privilege of proximity and there is a gradual subversion of the State.”
But at the same time, Mutsvangwa hinted that G40 was not good for Mugabe.
“They are using the analogy of a frog — that you cannot capture it and keep it in a bath tub. It will escape, but if you are clever you gradually add warm water into the tub. Being an amphibian, it will adjust and as the water gets hotter, the frog will adjust itself to death. That is what is happening in our country now.”
