Why Grace Mugabe did not attend Johannesburg court on Tuesday

Zimbabwe First Lady Grace Mugabe did not attend court on Tuesday over allegations of assaulting a 20-year-old South African woman whom she allegedly found with her two sons at a Sandton Hotel because police feared that she might be attacked by exiled Zimbabweans living in South Africa.

Reuters news agency said this evening Grace did not attend court after striking a deal with South African police.

The news agency also said Grace Mugabe has been granted diplomatic immunity allowing her to return to Harare.

Zimbabwe’s First Lady has hogged the limelight, for all the wrong reasons, since Sunday when she allegedly assaulted Gabriella Engels.

Afriforum, a right-wing Afrikaaner human rights organisation, has vowed to make sure that Grace Mugabe faces the law and will either institute private prosecution or challenge the granting of immunity.
