Tsvangirai tells the world: “We cannot walk this last mile alone”

Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai says Zimbabwe is on the last mile of its struggle against President Robert Mugabe’s rule but he told the region and the international community that “we cannot walk this last mile alone, without the warmth, empathy and solidarity of the region, Africa and the broader global community”.

In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, Tsvangirai said Zimbabwe needed the support of the world and expected universal condemnation of the naked brutality against its people by their own government for daring to express themselves.

The government has banned all demonstrations, though this is a right guaranteed under the country’s constitution.

“I have no doubt in my mind that Zimbabwe is on the verge of a new era,” he said.

Tsvangirai tabled a roadmap with four signposts to legitimacy, which includes the setting up of a transitional authority, before elections.
