The seeds for the formation of the Movement for Democratic Change were sown at a working people’s convention that was held from 26-28 February 1999. The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions which was headed by Morgan Tsvangirai as secretary general and Gibson Sibanda as president met with representatives of 30 other civic organisations to draw a document which among other things called for the formation of a “vigorous alternative political movement for change”.
