Former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, who was reported to be on the run, appeared in court today facing charges of criminal abuse and was remanded to 4 September on $1 000 bail.
He is accused of unlawfully instructing some junior police officers to release from cells, former Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) acting chief executive, Moses Juma.
Mphoko was asked to report to the CID Commercial Crimes Division in Bulawayo once a week.
The former Vice-President said he did not want to be detained because he would be poisoned.
