Marange diamonds for Europe

The Marange diamonds are to be taken off the European Union sanctions list when the EU meets on Monday, meaning that the diamonds can then be freely traded in Europe. United States sanctions on the diamonds will, however, still remain. Although Zimbabwe was readmitted to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme two years ago, it has not been able to sell its diamonds to Europe and the United States because of sanctions imposed on the major miner, the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation. The EU will, however, warn President Robert Mugabe that it will put the ZMDC back on the sanctions list if he rigs elections.
