Former Energy Minister Elton Mangoma was arrested yesterday for criminal abuse of power. Mangoma, who at the time was the deputy treasurer of the Movement for Democratic Change and one of the closest advisers to MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai, is alleged to have instructed the managing director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company ( ZETDC) Julian Chinembiri to cancel a tender and awarded it to OK Zimbabwe without going to tender. He was cleared of similar charges in 2011. Mangoma spearheaded the split of the MDC-T last year when he called for a renewal of the party’s leadership and was later expelled from the party leading to the formation of The MDC Renewal Team.
