Movement for Democratic Change vice-president Thokozani Khupe is to hold a meeting in Bulawayo today where she is expected to expel party leader Nelson Chamisa from the party and declare herself president.
Chamisa was endorsed as the party leader by the party’s national council but Khupe did not recognise this.
The national council gave Khupe seven days to accept Chamisa’s leadership or face expulsion but that deadline elapsed and no action was taken.
Chamisa gave her another three days and that too elapsed.
According to the Standard a faction led by Khupe is holding a meeting today at which it will endorse Khupe as the party leader and expel Chamisa on the allegations that he is fanning violence, usurping power and violating the party constitution.
This could be the final straw that might force Chamisa to expel Khupe from the party and thus result in a formal split of the MDC-T, the fourth major split since its formation 19 years ago.
