Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front secretary for administration Ignatius Chombo says President Robert Mugabe is going nowhere because he has a mandate to lead the country until 2018 and therefore cannot abandon that mandate.
Writing in the Sunday Mail Chombo said Mugabe also has commitments from his party’s electoral manifesto to fulfill.
“He is working tirelessly to deliver on those promises. Zimbabwe’s hopes and aspirations are premised on that,” he said.
Mugabe has been under siege to step down because of the economic meltdown in the country and some quarters have given him up to the end of this month.
Chombo, however, said Mugabe and his team will not get tired of doing what is best for the people of Zimbabwe.
“President Mugabe has been presented by his own party, Zanu-PF, as its candidate after he was endorsed as its leader until 2019. This means in 2018, President Mugabe will be the electoral candidate for ZANU-PF as he has to serve his five-year tenure. Therefore, President Mugabe is going nowhere,” he said.
