Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Kudakwashe Bhasikiti was fired yesterday bringing to 17 the number of ministers and deputy ministers dismissed since the purge on Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front senior officials suspected to have belonged to former Vice President Joice Mujuru’s faction. Unlike most of his colleagues Bhasikiti had managed to win his way into the new central committee, but Masvingo provincial officials have continued to call for his sacking, not just from the government but from the central committee as well. Most of those relieved of their posts have remained silent except former Secretary for Administration Didymus Mutasa who is challenging the party congress held in December. Mutasa was fired from the party this week joining Temba Mliswa, Jabulani Sibanda and Rugare Gumbo. With two months already gone since the congress, those fired have already lost the element of surprise that could have worked in their favour if they formed another party. But Mutasa, who has been talking the most, insists he belongs to the pre-congress ZANU-PF, which may be an indication that he (and his colleagues) still wants to hang on to the name. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change has suffered the same fate with those breaking away refusing to drop the name. This resulted in the formation of the MDC-T, MDC-M now MDC-N, MDC 99 and MDC Renewal Team.
