United States ambassador to Zimbabwe Bruce Wharton was today reported to have accepted that Zimbabwe’s 31 July elections were free and fair, according to The Herald.
“Yes, a lot was said about the elections. The EU described them as generally credible but the bottom line is that the July 31 harmonised elections were free and fair though there were some disappointments.” the paper quoted Wharton as saying..
“There was a major improvement in the manner in which the election process was done compared to the 2008 harmonised elections, a positive development in the right direction for the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.
Wharton is reported to have further stated that Washington does not seek to disengage with Zimbabwe. The two countries need each other.
If The Herald correctly quoted Wharton, the question then is: What’s the catch?
What has made Washington change its mind?
