Despite proclamations that Zimbabwe is a democratic country, more than two-thirds of the people say they are not free to join political parties of their choice.

A survey of 36 countries in Africa showed that only 30 percent of Zimbabweans, less than a third of the population, said they were free to join political parties of their choice.

This ranked Zimbabwe fourth from the bottom. It only beat Sudan, Egypt and Swaziland.

Citizens of other Southern African countries fared much better with those who felt completely free in Malawi at 85 percent; Botswana, 83 percent; Namibia, 80 percent; South Africa, 74 percent and Zambia, 71 percent.

The region was pulled down by Swaziland, 7 percent;   Zimbabwe, 30 percent;  Madagascar , 34%; and Mozambique, 36%.
