The High Court today lifted the ban on public demonstrations imposed by the police last week but the suspension is only for seven days.

Police imposed the ban which was to last until next week, 16 September, following a spate of demonstrations organised by the opposition parties under the umbrella of the National Electoral Reform Agenda as well as by civic activists using the social media.

Police had running battles with opposition protesters forcing NERA to postpone its planned demonstration for Friday last week to 16 September.

The ban was suspended by Justice Priscilla Chigumba following a legal challenge by NERA.

Legal experts had argued that the ban, using a statutory instrument, was unconstitutional.
