President Robert Mugabe has promised friendly elections this year saying Zimbabweans were now mature enough to understand their political differences. “In my country, we also have political divisions but I am glad we all appreciate whatever political affiliation that we belong to that we are Zimbabweans…Our elections must be fought on the basis that although we are divided but we have a common destiny as Zimbabwean people. We have groomed ourselves into that kind of understanding and I think our elections are going to be very friendly elections in the sense that although there will be a political fight, it will be a fight with the knowledge that we belong to each other.” The date for the elections has not been set yet. Mugabe had said they would be held in March but this seems most unlikely. Under the constitution, Zimbabwe has to hold the elections before 29 October.
