More than 800 Zimbabweans have been granted British citizenship since 2003 making Zimbabwe the second highest ranked country from Africa after South Africa, according to figures released yesterday by the Minister of State (Security) in the Home Office Baroness Neville-Jones.
Australians were on top with 5 265 followed by South Africa with 3 505, the United States of America with 2 550, Canada with 2 225, New Zealand with 1 285 and Zimbabwe with 810. An additional five Zimbabweans also got citizenship but they are listed as Southern Rhodesians.
A total of 19 315 people were granted UK citizenship. Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria only had 24o granted citizenship.
Minister of State immigration Damian Green also told the house that 248 Zimbabweans were granted student visas in the 12 months to January this year.
