Mnangagwa shows political clout as Chigwedere is booted out

Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa is beginning to show his political clout. Mashonaland East acting provincial chairman Aeneas Chigwedere has just been booted out for, among other reasons, failing to organise a rally for Mnangagwa. The move was part of a purge against suspected former Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s supporters. Mujuru was expelled from the party at the beginning of this month. The Mashonaland East interim provincial executive has recommended the expulsion of Marondera Central Member of Parliament Ray Kaukonde who is accused of being Mujuru’s principal financial backer, as well as Uzumba MP Simbaneuta Mudarikwa, Murehwa North MP Tendayi Makunde, Goromonzi South MP Petronella Kagonye and Olivia Muchena. The executive also wants five-year suspensions for Goromonzi North MP Paddy Zhanda, Maramba Pfungwe’s Washington Musvaire, Seke’s Phineas Chiota, Chikomba’s Felix Mhona and Goromonzi West’s Biata Nyamupinga. It also wants former provincial members George Katsande, Lucky Kandemiri, Vernon Muringayi, John Mushayi, Peter Murwira, Marble Kavindikisa, Taurayi Pasirayi, Getrude Mariwo and Lillian Zemura to be slapped with five-year suspensions.
