Miner killed at Mimosa

One miner was killed at the Mimosa Platinum Mine in Zvishavane on Monday after he was crushed by a falling rock, witnesses have said.

The mine’s executive chairman, Winston Chitando, is still to respond to emailed enquiries but witnesses said the miner, who was working alone at the time, died on the spot after he was crushed by a falling rock following a blasting underground.

“It was a normal clearing that normally follows any blasting underground, but while he was clearing loose overhanging rocks, a large overhead rock fell on him,” a witness said.

The accident is the first incident at the mine since 178 miners were trapped in a shaft in May, 2012 after a fire broke out in a shaft.

Mimosa is a 50:50 joint venture between South African miners, Impala Platinum and Aquarius Platinum.

There were no fatalities at Mimosa during 2014 and according to latest financials released by Aquarius, the mine had achieved more than four million fatality-free shifts by the end of last year.-The Source
