Lonrho down but not out

While there is a lot of talk about Tiny Rowland’s Lonrho empire crumbling, the man who made his fortunes from a car franchise, farming and mining operations in the then Rhodesia is not yet completely down.

One of Lonrho’s subsidiaries is reported to be a strong contender for the R50 million tender to print Namibia’s new currency, the Namibian dollar. The deal may be scuttled by an offer from France to print the new currency under a 20-year interest free loan.

Tiny has also been to Zaire to negotiate the printing of the new Zaire 100 000 notes. The highest denomination note at present is a Z50 000 note.
