The negatives are just too many. Nearly half the population, some 6.7 million people, is reported to be on the verge of starvation. Fuel queues are back. Inflation may soar to over 500 percent. Gross Domestic Product may fall by 28 percent from its 1998 peak. Income per head has declined by 37 percent since 1990. Some 28 percent of the workers have lost their jobs, 225 000 from the formal sector and a further 100 000 in the downstream.
