Tsvangirai says ZANU-PF can’t rig economy

Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai says although the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front stole the 31 July elections, it cannot rig the economy.

Tsvangirai told residents of Chitungwiza yesterday: “I want to tell you that you won the 31 July election. You did not lose it, but it is Robert Mugabe who stole the election and is causing a national crisis and I will not let you down until we achieve democratic change. Although ZANU- PF stole the election, it cannot steal the economy.”

The next elections are in 2018 while Tsvangirai’s current term as party leader ends in 2016. It is not clear whether he will complete his term because he is under pressure to step down following his defeat in July, the second since he took over leadership of the party.

Poll results have, however, consistently shown that he is more popular than his party.
Tsvangirai said he sympathised with the people of Zimbabwe who were losing jobs as companies were closing on a daily basis because ZANU- PF had created a national crisis which has resulted in the declining of the country’s economy.

The crisis of governance could only be resolved if key reforms were put in place and the country held fresh, free and fair elections.

Although he disputed the election results even before they were out, Tsvangirai withdrew his challenge of the results.

The MDC is reported to have prepared a dossier allegedly detailing how ZANU-PF rigged the elections.

Mugabe says Tsvangirai should just accept his defeat.
