Movement for Democratic Change deputy chairman Job Sikhala was today granted bail of Z$5 000 by High Court judge Neville Wamambo in Masvingo.

Sikhala is facing treason charges after he told people in Bikita that the MDC will overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa before his term expires in 2023.

Sikhala was campaigning for MDC candidate Moses Maphosa for the Ward 31 council seat that became vacant in April following the death of ZANU-PF councillor Patrick Marozhe.

ZANU-PF retained the seat with its candidate Thomas Mataga polling 1 112 votes against Maphosa’s 410.

The State had proposed Z$50 000 bail for Sikhala arguing that the offence he was facing was very serious.

Sikhala is due back in court on 24 July at Bikita magistrate’s court.
