One dies of coronavirus in Masvingo as Zimbabwe death toll rises to 261

One person died of coronavirus in Masvingo raising the national death toll to 261 and that for the province to five, the second lowest in the country.

There were 36 new cases and 20 recoveries.  So far 8 981 people have caught the virus and 8 184 have recovered.

There are still 536 active cases, more than half of them in Matebeleland. Bulawayo has 140 cases, Matebeleland North, where pupils at John Tallach have been affected, has 130 cases and Matebeleland South, 78. Harare is still at 76.

Matebeleland North, however, currently has the lowest number of deaths at three, though it recorded the first coronavirus case in the country.

The global trend continues to be worrying with 56.4 million cases, 1.35 million deaths, 39.2 million recoveries and 15.7 million active cases.

France is the only country in the 10 worst hit countries where there are more active cases than the number of people that have recovered. It has 2.1 mill0in cases but only 145 300 people have recovered and 46 700 have died leaving 1.9 million active cases.
