Nearly 30 000 Zimbabweans granted British citizenship in five years

Nearly 30 000 Zimbabweans have been granted British citizenship since 2009, according to figures released this week by James Brokenshire, Britain’s Minister of State in the Home Office responsible for Immigration and Security.

Zimbabwe is ranked number nine after India which is at the top. It was beaten by three other African countries: Nigeria with 40 914, South Africa with 35 536 and Somalia with 29 451. Zimbabweans totalled 28 940.

The highest number of Zimbabweans granted British citizenship was 7 703 in 2009 and the lowest last year at 4 412.
