Hwende is reported to have written to the Namibia Inspector-General of Police seeking protection because members of the CIO are now in Namibia and are reportedly planning to abduct him and return him to Zimbabwe.
According to the government controlled New Era newspaper Hwende has written to the Namibia police through his lawyer Norman Tjombe.
“Should our client not be afforded the necessary protection, our client will not hesitate to approach the High Court of Namibia on an urgent basis for appropriate order, including an interdict,” say Tjombe’s letter.
Tjombe said Hwende was due to return to Zimbabwe in early February.
“In the course of January 2019, our client was informed, through reliable sources, that members of the Zimbabwean intelligence agency, namely the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), travelled to Namibia to abduct and rendition him to Zimbabwe where he is apparently wanted for treason, incitement to commit public violence and other charges,” Tjombe said.
“According to the information, the members of the CIO already arrived in Namibia on or before 28 January 2019.”
Hwende was among the 27 people that police last week said were on their wanted list.
MDC president Nelson Chamisa said yesterday 43 of his senior party officials had gone into hiding following a crackdown by security forces which he said was aimed at crippling his party.
Six legislators were arrested.
