Italy not committed on Gono

The Italian government said it supported the Security Council resolution on Zimbabwe which entitled the United Nations to intervene militarily in the southern African country but said it had no comment on central bank governor Gideon Gono at the time.

It was responding to a request from the United States to list Gono on the European Union sanctions list as the US wanted to include him on the proposed UN sanctions list.

(U) Econoff delivered reftel demarche concerning EU sanctions

on Gideon Gono to MFA Counterterrorism Officer Jessica

Cuppelini at the MFA on July 8. Cuppelini passed the

information on to the concerned parties, but said the GOI had

no comment at this time on this particular individual. MFA

contacts have made clear, however, that the GOI supports the

draft Security Council Resolution on Zimbabwe.
