Do or die for Zimbabwe today

The Southern African Development Community is to decide today whether Zimbabwe can hold its elections on 31 July as declared by President Mugabe or it goes back to the drawing board.

Mugabe announced the election date on Thursday after passing the necessary electoral laws, a move that angered Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai who said he should have been consulted instead of just being notified.

Tsvangirai says the earliest date Zimbabwe can hold elections is 25 August.

SADC is under pressure to rein in Mugabe from the West and civil society, but at the same time it runs the risk of defying the country’s highest court.

It was the Constitutional Court which ordered the elections to be held by 31 July.

Seven of the nine judges agreed with only two dissenting.
