Shock as figures reveal Gwanda town clerk is second highest paid in the country

The town clerk of Gwanda is the second highest paid local authority chief executive in the country according to figures released by Deputy Minister of Local Government Joel Biggie Matiza in Parliament yesterday.

He has a gross salary of US$18 945.81 a month more than double the gross salary of Bulawayo town clerk which is US$9 439.19. Previous reports had said the town clerk earned about US$16 000 amonth.

The town clerk of Harare beats them all with a gross salary of US$21 000.

Surprisingly, the third highest paid local authority CEO is the Beitbridge town secretary with US$14 106.

While most salaries are boosted by allowances, the basic salary of the Beitbridge town secretary is the second highest at more than US$11 000 and is higher than the gross salary of the town clerk of Bulawayo after allowances.

According to the schedule the lowest paid town clerk is that of Gweru who has a gross salary of US$5 506.

This is the only town clerk in the big cities who is not going to be affected if the government goes ahead to reduce salaries of all executives to US$6 000.
