Mnangagwa bashed for urging Zimbabweans to live by the values Tsvangirai embodied

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been bashed for urging Zimbabweans to live by the values that the late Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai embodied, those of unity, dialogue and patriotism.

Mnangagwa, who was invited to Tsvangirai’s memorial service which took place on Saturday but did not attend, yesterday tweeted: “Today, as we remember Morgan & his contribution to the nation, let us all choose to live the values which he embodied; unity, dialogue & patriotism.

“Only by working together, irrespective of party, ethnicity or totem, can we build a peaceful & prosperous Zimbabwe for all.”

The President got an instant backlash with several twitter followers accusing him of shedding crocodile tears as he did not like Tsvangirai at all when he was still alive.

Activist group, TeamPachedu, responded: “Your military refused to salute Tsvangirai when he was still alive. The same military boycotted the National Security Council meetings with Tsvangirai. You were the Minister of Defence, and Chiwenga was the Commander of ZDF. Why salute him when he is dead?”

G Makoni added: “Without forgetting the beatings, wounds and fractures he sustained from Zanu pf, also remembering his supporters who were raped, incarcerated, tortured, brutalized and traumatized by zanu pf at the height of simple political. Rest in Peace Save.”

Chirorodziva tweeted: “Dzosa chawakaba Ruka, then we can have peace.”

Richard tweeted: “Emerson seek Jesus whilst you can.  Stop fooling me. You never liked Morgan.”

One of the rare tweets commending Mnangagwa came from Charity Maodza who said: “Thank you for showing us the direction of unity Mr President. Let us work with all willing Zimbabweans to rebuild our country. Madira jecha tosiyana nawo!”

The bashing is not new to Mnangagwa as most of the responses to the President’s tweets are negative but the number of people following him has more than doubled in the past 12 months.

Mnangagwa had 139 198 followers on 25 May last year but today he has 373 704 followers. This is, however, 121 000 less followers than MDC leader Nelson Chamisa.

Chamisa had 249 792 followers as at 22 June last year.
