Kofi Annan dies before Zimbabwe election verdict is out

Former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan who was also chair of The Elders has died.

Annan was in Zimbabwe last month at the head of a three-member Elders group that wanted to observe preparations for the 30 July Zimbabwe elections.

Movement for Democratic Change Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa, who met Annan when he came to Zimbabwe today said he was saddened by the death of Annan whom he described as a believer in Zimbabwe and its people.

“Deeply saddened by the sudden passing of the iconic Kofi Annan whom I met a few days ago. A rare breed of diplomat; soft spoken but unshakeably firm. He had great love for world peace & democracy. A believer in Zimbabwe & its people. Go well son of Africa, Champion of the world!” Chamisa tweeted.

A pro-ZANU-PF activist David Matsanga early this month, however, said Annan was one of the key people that were seeking regime change in Zimbabwe.

He mentioned the others as George Soros and Jeffrey Smith of Vanguard Africa.
