Biden falls into the ZANU-PF trap

It might be that  the Zimbabwe government is selective in its “enforcement of COVID-19 regulations to indefinitely postpone by-elections and prohibit MDC Alliance gatherings, while permitting internal elections and gatherings for the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) party and its allies to go forward”,  but the question remains: how will the MDC Alliance benefit if the by-elections are held, apart from crying foul about the need for electoral reform, rigging and vote-buying?

The Insider has always argued that the United States is not doing Zimbabweans a favour by meddling in the politics of Zimbabwe. Yes, a few politicians and activists might benefit, but the meddling prolongs the suffering of ordinary Zimbabweans. Some politicians might not have to rely on voters because they will get funding from elsewhere.

Zimbabwe would be having a third government now, if the West had not meddled in the 2000 referendum. Mugabe would have left the scene by 2010. The person who would have replaced him would have left by 2020.

While like any political party ZANU-PF is rejoicing at the crumbling of the MDC Alliance, the disintegration of the MDC-A is largely self-inflicted.

First Thokozani Khupe, Obert Gutu and others wrestled the MDC-T name and left Nelson Chamisa leading the MDC Alliance when he took over leadership of the party unconstitutionally.

Next Douglas Mwonzora, Elias Mudzuri, Morgen Komichi, Paurina Mpariwa, Tapiwa Mashakada and others left to go back to the MDC-T following the Supreme Court judgment that Chamisa’s rise to the top was illegal.

Then came the defections- Tongai Matutu, Lillian Timveos, Blessing Chebundo, James Makore and Obert Gutu.

Instead of self-introspection, the MDC-A has blamed all this on infiltration by ZANU-PF.  If all these people have been bought by ZANU-PF, then there is something fundamentally wrong with Zimbabwe’s opposition.

The United States, by coming out openly in support of the MDC-A, Tendai Biti, in particularly, especially in view of the way the party leaders have openly flouted the law including their own constitution, is only making things worse.

South African politician, writer and academic, Andile Mngxitama, in an article in which he said former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was the greatest black statesman in Africa said: “To be considered a saint in Western eyes (like former South African President Nelson Mandela)  is a curse black leaders should avoid like the plague.”

After all, if US leaders do not respect their own black citizens, why would they care a hoot about the people of Zimbabwe, unless there is something more important that they want from that country which Zimbabweans do not know about?
