The Movement for Democratic Change today said it is going to attend founding president Morgan Tsvangirai’s memorial at his home in Buhera and will wear whatever they want, party regalia or not, because Morgan Tsvangirai’s family in the MDC and whoever suffered with Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai’s brother Manasa had requested that no one should wear party regalia as the memorial was open to everyone regardless of political affiliation because Tsvangirai was a national leader and Prime Minister of Zimbabwe between 2009 and 2013.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been invited to the memorial but has not yet indicated whether he will attend or not.
MDC spokesman Jacob Mafume told a press briefing: “We are going to be wearing whatever we want wear whether it is party regalia or not because Morgan Tsvangirai is the founding member of the MDC. He is red inside his blood, inside his grave and he is red in heaven where he is.”
Asked about the family’s request, Mafume said: “We are the family of Morgan Tsvangirai and his family is the MDC. Those that were beaten with him, some died and other are carrying scars to this day are Morgan Richard Tsvangirai’s real family.
“His family has no demarcation. The whole of Zimbabwe, the MDC and everyone who died in his name wearing his t-shirt and those tortured wearing the party’s t-shirt are Morgan Tsvangirai’s family.”
