South African president Jacob Zuma, the man the Movement for Democratic Change and the West thought would rein in Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has now been dubbed Mugabe’s shameful protector for endorsing the just ended elections.
Zuma congratulated Mugabe for winning the elections which have been condemned by the West but accepted by the African observers, including the two key organisations, the Southern African Development Community and the African Union.
Now Zuma is being hammered for being soft on Zimbabwe and allowing Mugabe to steal an election.
The MDC and the West had hoped that Zuma would be tougher on Mugabe than his predecessor Thabo Mbeki who brokered the peace talks that led to the formation of the inclusive government but was accused of being too soft on Mugabe.
Mbeki was forced to step down before completing his second term.
The West was shocked by Mugabe’s victory 10 days ago and has refused to accept the results.
The MDC has lodged a court case to have the elections declared null and void and has called for fresh elections within 60 days of the court’s decision.
Mugabe told his opponent to go hang.
