ZRP spokesman says police at Ross Camp in Bulawayo voted today

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesman Charity Charamba says postal voting was conducted at Bulawayo’s Ross camp today, contradicting a statement by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission acting chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana who brushed off reports on the social media as hogwash.

“Yes there are police who are voting who are using the postal votes which is provided for under the Electoral Act, Section 72 Chapter 2:13 which entitles especially those from the disciplined forces who will be on duty during the voting days to vote prior to the elections,” Charamba was quoted by Voice of America as saying.

“This is done because some of the police officers are going to be deployed at polling stations which are very far away from their polling stations.”

Charamba said there were election observers during the polling.

“There are election observers there who are right there and the officer commanding province for Bulawayo where this complaint has emanated from is on the ground with election observers,” she said.

It is believed that there were no ZEC officials during the voting leading to claims that officers were voting in front of their seniors, which is a form of intimidation.
