The South African media has been awash with news that South African police can investigate allegations of torture by Zimbabwean officials against Movement for Democratic Change officials after the South African Supreme Court of Appeal ruled yesterday that the SAPS can do so.
Zimbabwe’s Prosecutor-General Johannes Tomana brushed off the ruling as a non-event saying Zimbabwe was not bound by any judgements made in South Africa or anywhere in the world because it had its own courts and its own constitution.
The case was raised by the Southern Africa Litigation Centre and the Zimbabwe Exiles Forum which wanted allegations of torture against MDC officials dating back to 2007 to be investigated by the South African Police Service.
The SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority had refused to investigate and filed the appeal.
