Zimbabwe to give white farmers security of tenure

Zimbabwe is now giving white farmers security of tenure and has asked provinces to submit names of white farmers whom they want to remain on farms so that they can get documents to enable them to plan their operations.

Lands Minister Douglas Mombeshora told The Herald: “We do not discriminate when issuing offer letters or permits. We do not have a separate policy for white people when it comes to land distribution and there are plenty of whites that have received offer letters in this country.

“In fact, we have asked provinces to give us the names of white farmers they want to remain on farms so that we can give them security of tenure documents to enable them to plan their operations properly.’’

One of the farmers expected to benefit is Helen Mitchell who was involved in a tussle with Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi over Barquest Farm.

Mzembi said he had been given an offer letter for the farm but Provincial Affairs Minister Shuvai Mahofa said Mzembi could not take over the farm at it was a strategic investment in the province.

Mitchell produces about 100 000 day-old-chicks a week on the farm.

According to The Herald, other beneficiaries from Masvingo include John Boland, a “pedigree” bulls producer; Yvonne Goddard, a dairy farmer;  Johannes Nel, another dairy farmer.
