Zimbabwe still owes UK £12.2 million for Land Rovers

Zimbabwe still owes Britain£12.2 million for land Rover vehicles that it purchased more than a decade ago, which civic organisations have said the country should not pay for because they were used to repress the people.

Zimbabwe’s debt was published last month in response to information requests about sovereign debts by Members of the UK Parliament.

The schedule shows that Zimbabwe owed the UK Export Finance, the operating name of the Export Credit Guarantee Department, £114.8 million.

The schedule does not show when the debts were incurred.

The bulk of the money, £51.1 million is owed for construction and equipment.

This is followed by oil pipelines with a debt of £35.8 million.

Land Rovers are third, followed by gas line products, radar systems and communications, power, telecommunications, transformers and reactors, and coke oven and machinery.

It is not clear how Zimbabwe’s debt fell so drastically to £114 million because last year the UK government said Zimbabwe owed the Export Credit Guarantee department £190 million.
