Zimbabwe schools to open on 22 March, exam classes on 15 March

Zimbabwe schools are to open on 22 March with examination classes opening a week earlier on 15 March, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said in her post cabinet media briefing today.

Teachers for examination classes are requested to report for duty on 10 March and the rest on 17 March.

Mutsvangwa said there shall be rotational school attendance in classes where learners cannot exercise social distancing.

“On the days when learners are not at school, they will be engaged through strategies such as Open Distance Learning and e-learning,” she said.

“Relevant modules are already under production. Among the catch-up strategies, all continuing classes will start with 2020 work. Syllabi have been compressed to facilitate accelerated coverage. Both Primary and Secondary school levels will follow three levels of accelerated compressed syllabus coverage,” she said.

Zimbabwe schools were closed during the first lockdown in March last year but re-opened briefly at the end of the year.

Classes were supposed to resume on 4 January after a two-week break, but they did not re-open after the country was hit by a second wave of the coronavirus.

Zimbabwe had only 13 867 cases of coronavirus from March to December last year as well as 363 deaths.

The cases had risen to 36 115 and deaths to 1 468 as of yesterday. There were, however, only 1 742 active cases since 32 905 people had recovered.

Zimbabwe has also embarked on a vaccination exercise and as of yesterday 21 456 people had received the jab.
