Zimbabwe says no one is going to starve

Vice-President Kembo Mohadi today said no one is going to starve in Zimbabwe because the country has enough maize stocks from last season to last seven months.

Addressing a “Thank You” rally at Mt Darwin in Mashonaland Central, Mohadi said the person in charge of the country’s granary Perrance Shiri was there at the rally and also came from Mashonaland Central.

He would make sure that the Department of Social Welfare distributed the food to those in need.

Mohadi said he had been sent to address the people because President Emmerson Mnangagwa had engagement at 1.30pm which made it impossible for him to travel to Mt Darwin and back on time.

Mnangagwa’s spokesman George Charamba told the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation that the President had spent the day in his office but would visit Mashonaland Central at a later date.

“His Excellency the President, E.D. Mnangagwa, today, Saturday, spent the day at his Munhumutapa Offices from where he made contact with a number of Heads of State and Government from the region and on the continent. The prime objective was for him to brief his colleagues on the situation obtaining in the country following opposition-instigated violent demonstrations which affected the country two weeks ago. He also received reports from returning special envoys he had dispatched to selected countries in the region and on the African continent for the same mission. This year’s opening ordinary summit of the African Union which the President will attend, is scheduled to convene in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the second week of February,” Charamba said.

Zimbabwe is expected to have less than normal rains this season but the government has vowed to make sure the country has enough food as it has adequate water for irrigation.
