Zimbabwe says its public service boss does not have a Facebook account

The government today announced that the chairman of the Public Service Commission Vincent Hungwe does not have a Facebook account.

“Any account using his pictures & other material is fake. Those who wish to make contact with him officially are advised to use http://psc.gov.zw,” the Ministry of Information said.

A Facebook page in the name of Vincent Hungwe where he is pictured with President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been opened but so far there are no posts except one stating his date of birth and the picture with Mnangagwa posted on 28 January.

The spread of fake news through the social media is now a worldwide menace and in some countries like the United States studies have shown that fake news on the social media attracts more people that real news.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesman George Charamba announced last week that he had no twitter account though one was opened in his name.

War veterans’ leader Christopher Mutsvangwa yesterday disowned a twitter account posting messages in his name.

Zimbabwe’s civil servants are currently divided over whether to go on strike or not with the majority saying they should give the government a chance for negotiations while teachers said they would go it alone.
