Zimbabwe says dam wall safe

The Zimbabwe government says checks by engineers have confirmed that the Manyera Dam wall is structurally safe and has withdrawn its warning that people downstream of the dam should evacuate and move to higher ground.

A statement by the Civil Protection Unit says that the dam has been spilling following the heavy rains due to Cyclone Idai but the dam wall is intact and safe.

The CPU also said a large rock weighing between 10 and 15 tonnes fell from the Mapadza Mountain in Bikita yesterday morning but no one was injured.

Two houses in the vicinity, however, developed cracks because of the vibrations from the rock fall.
