Zimbabwe Revenue Authority collects record $40 million at Beitbridge in December

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) collected a record $40 million at Beitbridge Border Post during December last year, an official has said.

The border post, which is the busiest entry point in the region, was handling an average of 25 000 people daily during December, more than double the number of people who pass through the border during off peak periods.

ZIMRA acting commissioner general Happias Kuzvinzwa said revenue collections were high despite a week long system failure in December.

“We collected $40 million. We have never collected that amount of money at Beitbridge. So within an environment of chaos, as people want to put it, ZIMRA demonstrated its resilience and commitment to make sure that all revenue leakages are sealed and properly managed,” Kuzvinzwa said.

The amount of revenue lost during the week long system blackout is still yet to be ascertained.

Net annual collections amounted to $3.7 billion against a target of $3.4 billion in 2017, which was a 15 percent increase from the $3.2 billion collected in the year 2016.- The Source
