Zimbabwe releases another $50 million for Cyclone Idai

Zimbabwe today released a further RTGS$50 million to resuscitate infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Idai as well as to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the devastating cyclone.

Almost 200 people were killed by Cyclone Idai which hit the country two weeks ago and some 327 were missing at the last count.

Some 43 schools were closed in Manicaland as a result of the damage caused by the cyclone.

Aid has been pouring into the worst affected areas mainly Chimanimani and Chipinge in Manicaland and Bikita in Masvingo.

There are, however, fears that there might be an outbreak of disease in the affected areas.

The RTGS $50 million released today brings to RTGS$100 million, the money released by the government help victims of the cyclone and restore infrastructure that was destroyed.

The bulk of the money is coming from the two percent tax that was introduced by the government in October last year and received a backlash from both the business sector and ordinary folk.

Some organisations are still challenging the legality of the tax.
