Zimbabwe pondering extending lockdown

The number of active coronavirus cases dropped once again today as the government said it was considering extending the Level 4 lockdown which ends next week.

There were 342 new cases today but 732 recoveries resulting in the number of active cases dropping to 7 067.

The number of deaths, however, rose to 38 from yesterday’s 19, bringing the total number of deaths to 1 160.

The pandemic has so far affected 32 646 people but 24 419 have recovered.

Harare now has 2 763 active cases followed by Manicaland with 895, Mashonaland West with 705 and Bulawayo rose to 453.

The Inter-Ministerial Taskforce o Covid-19 will meet next week to decide whether to extend the lockdown or not. The 30-day lockdown ends on 3 February.

People, however continue to flout lockdown restrictions. By 20 January 347 264 had been arrested for flouting the restrictions while 119 557 had been arrested for not wearing masks.
