Zimbabwe police ban fourth MDC demo, one more to go

Zimbabwe police have banned tomorrow’s demonstration in Masvingo by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change saying stakeholders who met the police today  did not support the demonstration, the fourth organised by the opposition.

Police have banned three other demonstrations, starting with the Harare one on 16 August, the Bulawayo demonstration scheduled for yesterday as well as today’s in Gweru.

Although some members of the opposition said they would appeal the ban, a party source said there were very little prospects of any of the remaining demonstrations being allowed.

The source said the party will meet tomorrow to review its strategy in view of the heavy handed manner in which the police and security forces have dealt with the planned demonstrations.

While the MDC has criticised the police and the government for denying the people their constitutional right to express themselves, critics say the MDC leadership had clearly demonstrated that the demonstrations were not meant to benefit the people but the leadership which was conspicuous by its absence at any of the planned demonstrations.

Only more planned demonstration, scheduled for Mutare remains.
